Art and Cooking Camp
This four day, blended curriculum will combine art and cooking to create masterpieces for both the eye and the belly.
In the kitchen, basic culinary techniques, knife skills, kitchen safety and nutritional guidance will be taught in a fun and informative way. We'll use mostly local fresh produce (campers will get to harvest vegetables fresh from the organic garden beds at Camp Cactus), and even picky eaters will enjoy preparing nutritious and delicious meals and snacks to share. Sample menus may include handmade pastas, vegetable soup, refried beans, homemade tortillas, guacamole, salsa and watermelon agua fresca; cobblers, fruit hand pies, homemade ice cream sandwiches, and more...
In the studio, campers will design and illustrate the recipes they cook using printmaking, painting, drawing and photographs to create unique cookbooks and personalized aprons to take home.
Each student will spend ½ their day in the kitchen, and ½ their day in the studio.
Chef Kathy Russell taught cooking and nutrition to elementary school students, parents and educators for 14 years in Berkeley Public Schools through the Edible Schoolyard Academy, founded by celebrated Chef Alice Waters. Chef Kathy's motto is "If they cook it, they will eat it".
